Field Hockey to Play a Pair of Matches This Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team will play a pair of matches this weekend. First on Friday, they will head to Hempstead, New York to face Hofstra at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Providence on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at University Field.

 Fairfield (1-8) vs. Hofstra (6-4): The Stags are 5-25 all-time against the Pride. The last matchup between the two sides was last season in Fairfield when the Stags fell 3-2.

 A Look at the Pride: Hofstra is riding a four game winning streak into Friday's match, besting Rider, Lafayette, UMass Lowell, and most recently Saint Francis University. Senior forward Claudia Marin Samper leads her squad with 28 points this season off 10 goals and 8 assists. Classmate Stella Schoen is second on the team with 19 points off 7 goals and 5 assists. Senior Lauren Saltus has started six games in cage for the Pride, posting 44 saves, a 1.60 goals against average, and an .815 save percentage.

 Fairfield (1-8) vs. Providence (8-2): The Stags are 2-7 all-time against the Friars. The Stags have won the last two matchups between the two sides, including last season's 4-2 victory in Providence.

 A Look at the Friars: Providence has won five in a row heading into the weekend, but will face top ranked UConn on Friday before visiting Fairfield on Sunday. Senior forward Adrienne Houle has totaled 19 points this season to lead her team with nine goals. Junior goalkeeper Megan Guilbert has started all 10 games this season and boasts a 1.45 goals against average with 43 saves and two shutouts this season.  

Last Time Out: Fairfield hosted No. 16 Virginia and fell 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Stags held the Cavaliers to just one goal in the first half. But In the second half, the Cavaliers wasted no time in adding to their one goal advantage scoring in the 40th minute. Then scored quick back to back goals in the 64th and 69th minute. Caitlin Bennett faced 15 shots on goal during the game, making 11 stops in cage.

Milestone Watch: Senior forward Ann Burgoyne has now compiled the most goals in Fairfield history with 47 career scores. The forward is also third with 104 points, just eight shy of the record for a career. Julie de Paeuw can jump into the Top 10 this season as well, she has compiled 20 goals and 49 points over her career, ranking 8th on each of Fairfield's all-time lists. Goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett can add to her impressive career during her final season as a Stag. Currently she ranks third in games played (60), third in wins (25), third in winning percentage (.471), and sixth in goals against average (2.52).

 Looking Ahead: After this weekend, Fairfield hosts a pair of games next weekend beginning with their first MAAC matchup against Rider and then a nonconference foe in Villanova.
