Field Hockey Drops To Cal

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to California 3-1 in their second match of the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The host school, Maryland, ended up winning the tournament after defeating American 6-2 in the final game.

For Fairfield, it was once again the first half that put them in a hole that they could not climb out of. Cal built itself a 2-0 lead by halftime that was too big to overcome. But other than the goals, the Stags outshot the Golden Bears six to five in the opening frame and had five penalty corners to just one for Cal.

In the 18th minute, Cal got on the board when Melina Moore flipped the ball right across the goal line for the opening score. Nearly two minutes later, Katrina Carter secured a pass from Monica Marrazzo and was able to score over the keeper to the near post.

Right out of the break, the Golden Bears capitalized on a loose ball in front of the goal when Janaye Sakkas found it and pushed it low over the goal line for the third score of the game.

Down 3-0, the Stags did all they could to avoid the shutout. Finally in the 69th minute, Ann Burgoyne took a hard shot from the top of the circle that found its way to the back of the net, making the score 3-1 with under two minutes to play. The goal also marked Burgoyne's 46th of her career making her Fairfield's All-Time leader in the category.

Senior Caitlin Bennett faced 11 total shots and made four saves on the day. In total, Fairfield outshot Cal 14-11 and had more than double the amount of penalty corners at seven to three.

Next up, the Stags will play their first game of at University Field this season when they host Penn at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
