Stags Look For First MAAC Win at Iona

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team travels to Iona for a midweek MAAC contest on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.

Fairfield (4-6, 0-2 MAAC) vs. Iona (5-5, 0-1 MAAC): The Stags and Gaels will meet on Wednesday for the 14th time in program history. Fairfield is 13-0 against Iona and topped the Gaels 13-6 at home last season.

Scouting the Gaels: Iona is 5-5 this season and is coming off a 14-11 win over LIU Brooklyn on April 2. The Gaels had three players with at least four points on the day. Senior attack Mary Kate McCormick led the way with four goals and five assists against the Blackbirds. Erin Pugh notched four goals and one assist while Rachelle Serafini tallied four assists on the day. McCormick and Pugh are also the team leaders with 50 and 42 total points respectively this season. Senior goalkeeper Thea Leitman has made nine starts this season recording 50 saves and an 11.80 goals against average.

Last Time Out: The team dropped to 0-2 in conference play with a 12-8 defeat at the hands of Marist College. The Stags built a 5-2 lead with 8:07 to play in the first half, but Marist came storming back to tie the game at six heading into the break. With the momentum of the first half on their side, Marist came out firing and scored the next two goals to build an 8-6 edge. Jenna Fuchs cut that lead to one with under 20 minutes to play, but that was the closest Fairfield would get. The Red Foxes iced the game with their final tally by Allison Gionta with just 90 seconds to play and a 12-8 lead.

Racking Up the Points: Two Stags now have double digit point streaks after Saturday's loss to Marist. Julieanne Mascera tallied four points to bring her streak to 22. And junior Alex Fehmel had one goal in the last game and has now tallied at least one point in 31 straight contests.

Balanced Attack: Fairfield has five players with at least 15 points this season. Leading the way is junior Riley Hellstein who has tallied 31 goals and four assists to total 35 points. Behind her is Julieanne Mascera with 27 points (22 goals, 5 assists), Alex Fehmel with 26 points (17g, 9a), Maeve Quinn with 19 points (10g, 9a), and Colleen Reynolds with 17 points (13g, 4a).

Looking Ahead: The Stags will host Siena at noon on Saturday as the first half of a Fairfield lacrosse double header.
