PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The men's and women's second varsity 8 as well as the men's and women's varsity 8 each advanced to the petite final while the women's novice 8 rowed in the final as the Fairfield University rowing teams competed at the Kerr Cup on Saturday.
The women's novice 8 secured a second-place finish in its heat with a time of 7:14.97, which was runner up to Temple's winning time of 7:03.86. The Stags' time was good enough to earn a spot in the petite final, in which they secured sixth place by crossing the finish line in 7:18.26. West Point won the petite final with a time of 6:52.79. Fairfield's novice 8 was comprised of Leanne Anderson, Julia Mackie, Maggie Garvey, Maggie O'Donnell, Natalie Scotto, Tina Chalastra, Ani Dennen, Lina Foncello, and coxswain Katie Clark.
The women's second varsity 8 took fourth in its head with a time of 7:19.44 which sent the crew into the petite final. Fordham won the heat with a winning time of 6:53.34, followed by Drexel (6:58.09), and Lehigh (7:16.68). The Stags captured second place in the petite final, edging both Stetson and Sacred Heart with its time of 7:22.01. Villanova won the race in 7:11.30. Fairfield's crew included Shelley Wilson, Megan DiBello, Casey Bowler, Amanda Murphy, Danielle McKenna, Melissa IIannucci, Kerry Clarke, Sarah Bucklen, coxswain Victoria Marano.
The men's second varsity 8 followed a similar route, starting with a fourth-place finish in its heat with a time of 6:41.06. St. Joseph's captured the first-place position by crossing the line in 6:00.87 with Delaware (6:02.58) and Gonzaga (6:04.06) taking the next two spots. The Stags moved on to the petite final and took third place at its time of 6:34.97 was just short of runner up Franklin & Marshall's time of 6:45.07. Mary Washington won the event by a couple of seconds, taking the top spot in 6:31.89. Patrick Mills, Charles Cooper, Jordan Greco, Jack Carty, John Cervone, Luke Melcher, Mike Clarkson, Michael Giuliana, and coxswain Tim Valente represented Fairfield in this race.
The women's varsity 8 placed fourth in its heat by registering a time of 7:06.43, trailing Fordham (6:42.09), Lehigh (6:47.75), and Washington College (7:01.17). Stetson took fifth place by earning a time of 7:12.00. The Stags collected fifth place in the petite final by crossing the line in 7:07.82. Villanova won the race with its time of 6:50.06. The crew consisted of Kelsey Carthew, Amanda McKenna, Nolan Campbell, Amber Bagdonas, Eileen Keenan, Chloe Scherpa, Maria Levano, Liz Franger, and coxswain Nicole Karwashan.
The men's varsity 8 started the day by taking third place with a time of 6:08.89 as St. Joseph's took the top spot in 5:47.97. The Stags also secured a third-place finish in the petite final with its time of 6:06.60, just .05 off Mary Washington's second-place finish. The varsity 8 included James Laviolette, Gregory Coppola, James Mulhall, John Imor, Robert Lawler, George Bellos, Alexander Nowicki, Herbie Marache, and coxswain Kara Reese.
Fairfield also entered three 4s in the Kerr Cup, beginning with a novice 4 crew that took fifth place (8:22.15). The boat was comprised of Katie Unfried, Megan Dobensky, Rachel Sansone, Katie Santo, and coxswain Liz Bouregy. The women's varsity 4 also placed fifth in its race, securing a time of 8:02.03. The crew consisted of Allison Sloan, Jackie Ozyjowski, Cat Clough, Colleen Sheridan, and coxswain Sara Nardi.
The men's varsity 4 also raced during the day and netted a second-place finish with a time of 6:56.57, just two seconds off the winning pace set by Fordham B (6:54.19). The Stags entry included William Quentin, Casey Fuller, Jack Santoro, Travis Day, and coxswain Olivia Vita.
