FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team will return home after a six-game road trip to host Marist College on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Saturday's game is Fairfield Youth Lacrosse Day, all Fairfield Youth Lacrosse team members who wear thier jerseys will recieve free admission to the game. In addition, there will be a post game meet and greet with the team.
Fairfield (4-5, 0-1 MAAC) vs. Marist (4-5, 1-0 MAAC): The Stags and Red Foxes will meet on Saturday for the 27th time in program history. Fairfield is 17-9 against Marist and won their most recent matchup 10-9 in Poughkeepsie last April.
Scouting the Red Foxes: Marist is 4-5 this season and is coming off an 18-10 conference win over Iona on March 26. Senior midfielder Kara McHugh notched six goals and added an assist in the victory. The senior's 35 points are second on the team to Allison Gionta's team leading 44 points. In cage, junior goalkeeper Abigail Witczak has made eight starts this season posting 75 saves and an 11.52 goals against average.
Last Time Out: The team dropped their MAAC opener at Canisius in a 12-6 loss. The Stags jumped out to an early lead before the Golden Griffs clamped down on defense and took control of the game. The story of the day was how dominant the home side was off the draw, winning the battle in the middle, 13-6. Fairfield collected just one draw control in the first half. Junior Riley Hellstein led the way with two goals, while Colleen Reynolds, Julienne Mascera, Maeve Quinn, and Lily Crager all notched one. Chelsey Sidaras played all 60 minutes between the pipes facing 24 shots and making five saves.
Racking Up the Points: Two Stags now have double digit point streaks after Friday's loss at Canisius. Julieanne Mascera tallied one goal to bring her streak to 21. And junior Alex Fehmel had an assist in the last game and has now tallied at least one point in 30 straight contests.
Hellstein's on Fire: Junior Riley Hellstein has three games scoring at least six goals this season, including a seven goal performance against New Hampshire. In the win, the midfielder had a career-high nine points, also adding two assists on the day. She is Fairfield's leader with 33 points and 30 goals this season. The junior also ranks among the nation's best in several statistical categories.
