Box Score NEWARK, Del. – The good thing about baseball is that you are forced to turn the page pretty quickly. The Stags will come back tomorrow still with a chance to win a couple of games and take the series. Tonight, Delaware scored 19-unanswered runs, including five on just two hits in the third inning to take control of a game they would eventually win 22-6 over the Stags. The 22 runs are the most the Stags have allowed since March 1, 2009 against UMASS. Before that deciding third frame, the Stags had their largest lead of the game, 4-0, courtesy of two Fairfield home runs.
Troy Scocca and Jack Gethings were the two to power the Stags in the early going as both slugged second inning home runs to open up the scoring in the contest. The lefty Scocca hit his team-leading third home run of the spring as he launched one over the right center field wall to give the Stags a 1-0 lead. The right hand hitter Gethings came up with a runner on and smacked his first collegiate long ball and the Stags were up 3-0. Kevin Radziewicz continued the inning with a RBI base hit to give Fairfield their largest lead at 4-0.
All of this scoring was done against the ace of the Delaware staff in right-hander Ron Marinaccio who was named the MVP of their pitching staff during his freshman season last year. Coming into the game, Marinaccio was leading the CAA with a 1.08 ERA. The Stags tagged him for four runs in the game, just the fifth time in his 13 starts he has allowed that many runs.
However, the Stags' fielding came apart in the third as the Blue Hens scored five runs with only two hits. Delaware started their inning with one runner on and two outs, but the Stags would commit two errors, allow two walks, and hit a batter while the home side batted around and took a commanding 7-5 lead. The two RBI hits by Nick Patten and Brian Mayer never left the infield.
Marinaccio was able to settle down after given the lead, as the Stags would get two extra base hits the rest of the way while Marinaccio striking out six, including the side in the fifth inning. Tim Zeng and Mac Crispino had the two big hits for the Stags during that span with a double each.
A sacrifice fly by Crispino ended the Delaware run that jumped to 19-unanswered runs. Tyler Gambardella also got the Stags on the scoreboard with his first career hit, a RBI single to center field.
Delaware used six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to put the game well out of reach.
The Stags tallied 11 hits against the right-hander starter, tying the most he has given up in Marinaccio's young career. Zeng led the way with his first career three-hit contest while Scocca, Gethings, and Crispino each recorded two.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12pm.
