Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte right fielder T.J. Nichting doubled in the game-winning run in the 13th inning which completed a seven-run comeback as the Fairfield University baseball team was swept in their final doubleheader in North Carolina (6-2, 8-7) to the Charlotte 49ers.
The Stags (4-7) scored the first seven runs of the rubber game, which was started by Jake Salpietro connecting on his second home run of the spring to give the Stags a 2-0 lead.
Fairfield batted around in the next stanza, scoring five runs in the process. Kevin Radziewicz bunted home Jack Gethings, who singled to start off the inning. After a walk to Salpietro loaded the bases, Brendan Tracy was hit by a pitch to force in the game's fourth run and Mac Crispino laced the big knock of the inning with a two RBI single. In total, the Stags scored seven runs on four hits during the first two innings.
However, the Stags would not score during the next 11 innings, allowing Charlotte (8-8) to mount their comeback.
Four of those runs crossed the plate during the 49ers turn in the third, starting off with Reece Hampton's RBI double to put the home team on the board. The freshman has shown he can make an immediate impact in the Conference USA, as he has recorded a hit in all 16 games of his early career. The rookie would later score on a single by Brett Netzer which would be followed by a two-run single by Drew Ober.
The 49ers came within a run after Derek Fritz laced a two-run homer in the sixth, but the 49ers would get no closer as they stranded the tying run Hampton at third.
That would be the theme of the game for the home team as the 49ers stranded 15 men on base during the late game. They finally scratched across the tying run in the eighth on an Eddie Hull sacrifice fly.
The Stags went pretty quiet, as 13-straight were retired until Salpietro reached on an error in the 10th. Charlotte was the team to have the majority of chances late in the game. With the bases loaded and just one out in the 10th, Peter Horn induced a shallow fly ball and a groundout to keep the game alive.
The highlight moment of the three-hour game came in the 12th inning as center fielder Drew Arciuolo gunned down the potential winning run at the plate after a single up the middle to bring the game into the 13th inning.
This concluded a doubleheader where the Stags dropped the first game 6-2, getting their entire offense in the eighth inning. On a 2-0 pitch, freshman Tom Ryan connected on his first career homerun down the left field line to put the Stags on the scoreboard, trailing 6-2.
Salpietro recorded one of his team-high five hits on the day in the ninth inning, but the Stags could not mount a rally.
The Stags trailed from the second inning, after Nick Daddio walked with the bases loaded and the eventual hero Nichting scored on a wild pitch. The 49ers put across five of their six runs in the first three innings. Charlotte starter Colton Laws made it hold up after throwing seven shutout innings.
Salpietro capped off his impressive .538 series with five hits in the two games combined, three in the nightcap. Arciuolo was the only other Stag with multiple hits in the extra inning loss, as he recorded a pair.
Mike Bonaiuto increased his season-long scoreless streak to eight innings as the lefty reliever went two innings, keeping the 49ers off the board. Freshman John Signore lowered his season ERA to 1.54 after hurling 1.1 scoreless innings in the extra frame. Rookie Bobby McNiff appeared in his second game of his career and worked a scoreless inning.
The Stags will return closer to home when they travel to St. John's for a Tuesday afternoon game. First pitch at 3pm can be seen on ESPN3.
