FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team is coming off an exciting last minute win over Hofstra on Saturday. Now 2-2 on this young season, the Stags will travel to across town to rival Sacred Heart Wednesday for a 3:00 pm game.
Fairfield (2-2) vs. Sacred Heart University (1-2): The Stags and Pioneers will meet on Wednesday for the 11th time in program history. Fairfield is a perfect 10-0 against Sacred Heart and last season claimed an 11-2 victory at home.
Scouting the Pioneers: Sacred Heart is 1-2 this season and in their last game they fell 13-10 to Iona on February 25. Their first win was a 14-10 victory over Holy Cross on February 20, and Wednesday's game will be their first home contest of 2016. Offensively, junior midfielder Caitlin Delaney leads the Pioneers with 13 points and 10 goals. Right behind her is junior attacker Alyssa Pearce who leads the team with six assists and is second with nine points. Sophomore Paige Hammick has played every minute between the pipes for Sacred Heart posting a 12.67 goals against average and 38 saves.
Last Time Out: The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team scored with under 30 seconds to play to earn a one goal win over Hofstra on Saturday afternoon, 13-12. Senior Julieanne Mascera scored the final tally for the Stags on a free position shot with 29 ticks left in the game. On offense the Stags were led by Colleen Reynolds' career-high five points and four goals. Alex Fehmel and Mascera each recorded a hat trick, while Riley Hellstein chipped in two and Kelly Camardo had one.
Magical Mascera: Senior attacker Julieanne Mascera pulled off some last second magic the last time out when she sealed the win for Fairfield with a free position goal with 29 seconds left. It was Mascera's third goal of the day, notching her third hat trick in as many games. The senior also extended her point streak to 16 games, dating back to March 21, 2015.
Fantastic Fehmel: Junior midfielder Alex Fehmel leads the team with 13 points and is tied for second with 11 goals. Fehmel has scored a goal in each of the four contests this season and has registered at least one point for 25 consecutive games, dating back to April 26 of her freshman season.
Looking Ahead: Fairfield will continue on the road with a trip to Durham, New Hampshire to take on the University of New Hampshire on Saturday at noon.
