Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- On a night where the Fairfield faithful paid tribute to the senior class, the Fairfield University men's basketball team showed their appreciation to the fans by treating them to a 76-69 win at Webster Bank Arena. The victory extended the Stags' winning streak to six games, the longest such streak in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Fairfield finished the season series with a split against Siena, falling to the Saints by 15 points in early January. Since that game, Fairfield has won 11 of 15 games including its current winning streak.
"We are a lot better basketball team since we played them," Head Coach Sydney Johnson said. "We have improved defensively and offensively. We have matured and we have grown up and realized the seriousness of each possession. We didn't prepare any differently. I just think they matured and locked in to a level that has raised the team up."
The Stags took control of this game from the start, scoring the first 10 points of the game. Jerome Segura and Jonathan Kasibabu posted four points each during the run as Fairfield netted five of its first seven shots. Siena finally put points on the board when Brett Bisping laid the ball in the basket with 15:59 remaining in the half.
The lead reached 12 points after Matija Milin's layup brought the score to 18-6 at the 12:56 mark. Siena finally put a solid offensive stretch together by outscoring the home team 10-1 that made it a one possession game at 19-16 following a free throw by Bisping. Milin responded with a three-point field goal to double the Stags' advantage. Siena fought back to within two points, 25-23, but Fairfield went on an 11-3 run to regain its double-digit lead, 36-26, with two minutes left. Tyler Nelson scored five of those points, more than half of his nine first-half points.
With a seven-point halftime lead in hand, Fairfield scored the first eight points of the second half to take command once again, 46-32. Segura started the run with a layup which Gilbert followed with a three-point field goal on the next possession.
After the lead reached 17 points at 51-34, Siena slowly chipped away at the lead, eventually getting it down to 10 points with eight minutes left. The Saints continued to get closer over the next few minutes, coming back within three points with less than two minutes remaining, 64-61. Fairfield responded with five straight points to grab some comfort at 69-61 with a minute left.
Nelson and Milin led all Fairfield scorers with 16 points each, while Gilbert posted 12 points and Kasibabu netted 11 markers for the Stags. Bisping posted a double-double for Siena with 16 points and 11 rebounds, one point off team leader Javion Ogunyemi's 17 points.
Fairfield will finish the regular season on Saturday when the team heads to Saint Peter's for a 2 pm game. Following the Saint Peter's game, the Stags will turn their focus to the 2016 MAAC Tournament which takes place in Albany.
