Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Sammy Ruffolo stroked six hits in nine at-bats and scored four times to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep of Iona College on the road. The victory placed the Stags in a three-way tie for first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings with Manhattan and Canisius. All three teams have a 13-5 record in conference play.

Fairfield picked up the sweep in dramatic fashion, starting with a 12-inning victory in the first game. The Stags trailed by four runs late in the game but rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Four Fairfield hits combined with two Iona errors to tie the game at 5-5. Gianna Kinhofer picked up an RBI with a grounder while Lindsey Ball provided a two-run triple.

The two teams battled through five scoreless innings which kept the game tied at 5-5, Iona had the best chance at scoring a run during that stretch, picking up two hits in the ninth inning that put runners on first and second but Nicole Gardon induced a pop up to end the threat. Fairfield ended the game with a three-run 12th inning. Brianna Levick opened the inning with walk and eventually reached third base after Ruffolo's single Tori Reed broke the game open with a two-run triple that made it a 7-5 Fairfield lead. Reed would score one batter later off Sam Frungillo's base hit.

Gardon finished off the game and earned the victory after coming in for starter Lauren Falkanger. Falkanger allowed five unearned runs in her eight innings of work, yielding eight hits and striking out eight batters to earn the victory.

The second game went Fairfield's way from the start as the Stags scored five runs with two outs in the second inning. The big  hit came off the bat of Kinhofer, who laced a three-run triple that brought home the team's first runs of the game. Ruffolo singled home Kinhofer and would score later in the inning on a throwing error.

Fairfield added one more run in the game which came once again with two outs in the inning. Ruffolo started the run with a double which Reed followed with her own double to make it 6-0 in Fairfield's favor. Destinee Pallotto earned the win by tossing a four-hit shutout that included five strikeouts.

The Stags will finish up the regular-season with a doubleheader on Sunday against Manhattan at Alumni Softball Field. The twin bill starts at noon with senior day ceremonies starting prior to the first pitch.
