Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- There is a baseball adage that states a walk is as good as a hit. That phrase was never more true than today's game as the Fairfield University team drew three bases-loaded walks in the seventh inning and rallied for a 6-4 road win over Sacred Heart.
A late-inning rally did not appear to be in order at the start of the game as Fairfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings. The Stags started the game with a pair of runs in their first at-bat and it all started with Lauren Filicia's leadoff single. She took second when the base hit was misplayed, and went to third base following Sammy Ruffolo's ground out. Tori Reed picked up a walk to put runners on the corners, but quickly moved up a base with a stolen base. Sam Frungillo brought both runners home with a double to center field.
The Stags added a run in the third inning, getting all the base runners on after two outs. Reed reached on a two-base error and advanced to third when Frungillo singled. Kate Robinson completed the rally with a base hit that made the score 3-0.
Sacred Heart took over the game over the next three innings, putting a run on the scoreboard in the fourth inning and tacking on three more runs in the sixth inning to grab a 4-3 edge. The first run was a result of a sacrifice fly to right field by Kelyn Fillmore. Fillmore was responsible for the second run with an RBI single, the first of three runs in the sixth inning. Sacred Heart would take the lead with a base-loaded walk from Alyssa Pitre.
That walk would foreshadow a big inning for the Stags as they would score three runs on one hit and one Pioneer error. Ruffolo brought the first run home with her walk, while Frungillo gave the Stags the lead with her base on balls. Robinson chipped in with another walk that forced home a run to close the scoring.
Destinee Pallotto ended up working six innings to register the win, allowing just three hits and walking one on the afternoon.
Fairfield will close out the regular season this weekend by heading to Iona College four a doubleheader on Saturday before hosting a pair of games against Manhattan on Sunday. The Sunday doubleheader will also be Senior Day as the team will honor Sam Frungillo, Brianna Levick, and Sammy Ruffolo.
