Softball Rallies To Complete Sweep Of Quinnipiac

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with its 6-4 and 5-4 victories over Quinnipiac University. The Stags completed the sweep by scoring a run in their last three at-bats to post a 5-4 victory in eight innings. Fairfield won the opener 6-4 behind three RBI from Tori Reed.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat of the game using a double and a single to gain a lead against starter Lauren Falkanger. Fairfield jumped on Quinnipiac starter Hannah Lindsley. Lauren Filicia led off with a base hit and went to second following Reed's walk. Sam Frungillo was next in the batter's box and promptly laced a double to left center field to make it a 2-1 lead.

Reed tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning with an RBI single that sent home Angelina McGuire and Filicia to push the advantage to 4-1. Quinnipiac rallied for a run in the fourth inning but the Stags picked it back up in the bottom of the inning with Sammy Ruffolo directing a single the other way, making it 5-2. The lead reached four runs after Reed earned a bases-loaded walk, giving Falkanger a comfortable lead.

Quinnipiac made a run in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs. After a mound visit, Falkanger took care of the next batter with three straight strikes to end the game. Jordan Paolucci had a sacrifice fly to score the first Bobcat run of the inning and Keliani Finley brought home the other run with a base hit.

In the second game, Quinnipiac erased a two-run deficit with a four-run fourth inning, all coming off starter Destinee Pallotto. Pitcher Sydney Robey capped the big inning with a two-run homer over the right-center fence.

Fairfield began its come back with a run in the sixth inning, courtesy of a single from Filicia that chased home McGuire. The game was tied in the seventh inning when Kate Robinson hit a ball over the left fielder's head which one-hopped the fence, allowing Makenna DiGuilio to trot home to make it a 4-4 game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Fairfield loaded the bases off infield singles from McGuire and Brianna Levick. Ruffolo collected a walk to load the bases with one out, but a strikeout put the second out on the board. Frungillo came to the plate and eventually hit a hard ground ball to the left of third base which was kicked by an infielder and allowed the winning run to come home.

Nicole Gardon earned the win by tossing 4.1 innings without yielding a run. She surrendered four hits and one walk against one strikeout.

The Stags get back to action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader against the University of Stony Brook.
