Stags Sweep Of Siena Extends Win Streak To Six Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – A doubleheader sweep of Siena College allowed the Fairfield University softball team extended its winning streak to six games and pushed the team over the .500 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Stags won the opening game by a 10-2 score and edged the Saints 5-4 in the nightcap.

Freshman Kate Robinson continues to pace the offense, enjoying another big day at the plate. After posting five RBI in Saturday's sweep of Saint Peter's, the rookie drove home four more runs this afternoon. She tacked on three RBi in the first game and one more in the second game to bring her total to 16 for the season.  Tori Reed added to her team leading 19 RBI by driving home five runs today. Reed and Robinson both homered in the doubleheader.

In the opening game, Fairfield scored early and often and reached double digits for the first time this year. Lauren Filicia started the game with a base hit and was sacrificed to second base by Sammy Ruffolo's sacrifice bunt. She went to third with a stolen base and came home on Reed's base hit. The Stags added three more runs in the third inning with Robinson providing the big hit, a three-run double that pushed the lead to 4-0.

Siena put a run on the board with a solo home run in the fourth inning, but Fairfield put the game out of reach two innings later with five more runs. Reed brought home the first run with a double with Sam Frungillo following with an RBI groundout that resulted in an error. Gianna Kinhofer had the team's other RBI when she sent a double into the gap.

The Saint pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning, a run which Fairfield earned back in the seventh when Brianna Levick, Ruffolo, and Reed put together singles to plate the final run. Lauren Falkanger received the complete game victory by scattering seven hits and striking out a pair of Saints, giving her five wins this season.

In the second game, Filicia reached first base to start the game on a misplayed grounder. After being sacrificed to second and taking third on a ground out, Filicia came home on a two-out single from Frungillo. Fairfield added a pair of runs in the third inning, courtesy of Ruffolo's single and Reed's home run.

Siena strung three hits together in the fifth inning to earn a run, but the Stags took it back after Nicole Capra's RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-1 in Fairfield's favor. The Saints rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run homer from Paige Lloyd. Fairfield won the game in the ninth inning with Robinson's leadoff home run.

Falkanger collected another win by pitching the final three innings of the game, finishing the game for starter Destinee Pallotto and reliever Nicole Gardon.

The Stags will play another pair of conference games on Tuesday when they host Quinnipiac University for a doubleheader. First pitch is 2:30 pm.
