FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team was edged by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College, 11-10, this afternoon for Senior Day at Rafferty Stadium. Junior Colleen Reynolds recorded a hat trick for the Stags while Courtney Chmil and Alex Fehmel recorded two goals apiece. Fairfield also received goals from Jamie Leone, Julieanne Mascera, and Maeve Quinn.
Scoring started early, with Taylor Giglio putting Canisius on the board at 28:03. Another free position goal by the Golden Griffins' Tori Greco, at 25:15, lifted the lead to 2-0. Fairfield answered with a 3-0 run of unassisted goals, to bring the score to 3-2. The first goal was scored by Leone, at 20:54, followed by Fehmel and Chmil at 20:16 and 14:42 respectively.
Canisius responded with their own 3-0 run. At 11:05, the Golden Griff's Ashley Bull found the back of net before a pair of goals from Erica Evans at 11:05 and 9:23. Play continued for the next four minutes until Chmil scored to narrow the gap to 5-4. Canisius' Evans scored once more before Mascera netted a goal with just 53 seconds left in the half. The Golden Griffins took a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
The second half started much like the first with Canisius' Giglio scoring the first goal at 28:56. The Golden Griffs went on a 3-0 run over the next four minutes to make the score 10-5. The Stags answered with back-to-back goals by Reynolds and Fehmel at 23:53 and 21:53.
Play continued for the next four minutes before Quinn found the back of the net, off a feed from Reynolds, at 17:44. Canisius responded with a final goal from Evans at 12:49 to make the score 10-8. Reynolds netted an unassisted goal at 11:39 to make it a one-goal game. Fairfield continued to battle, holding a strong defensive effort until Reynolds once again found the back of the net with 5:00 left in regulation. The Stags kept fighting, taking two more shots on goal but were unable to score, yielding an 11-10 victory for the Golden Griffins.
Junior goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras manned the net for the Stags, making nine saves, while Canisius' Kayla Scully tallied eight.
The Golden Griffins slightly outshot the Stags 25-24, and had a 12-11 advantage in draw controls. Fairfield had a slight 14-10 advantage in ground balls. Meghan Reda had a team-high four caused turnovers while Reynolds recorded a team-high four points in the contest.
For Canisius, Evans tallied five goals for a team-high five points while Tori Quinn and Greco picked up a team-high three draw controls apiece.
Fairfield (9-4; 4-1 MAAC) will host conference foe Monmouth on Wednesday, April 15 for their final home contest of the 2015 campaign. The Stags will then travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday, April 18 to take on Marist at 1:00 p.m. before heading to Hamden, Conn. to face Quinnipiac for their final regular contest of the year.
