Stags Topped by Terriers in NCAA Tournament

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Fairfield University field hockey team wrapped up its season in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon. The Stags fell to Boston University by a score of 6-1 in the Play-In Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Stags found themselves in an early hole as the Terriers scored the first four goals of the game. Just three minutes into the game Amanda Cassera found the back of the net for Boston and they would not look back from there. By halftime, the Terriers were up 3-0 and would add three more in the second.

The Fairfield offense was stifled in the first half as they did not register a shot or a penalty corner. The Terriers were able to control the ball right from the get go.

“Boston University is a great offensive team and they came out with a lot of energy in the first half and got the early lead. That really put our team in a tough position from the start,” said head coach Jackie Kane.

Out of the break, Kali Shumock started the scoring just three minutes into the final stanza.

The Stags offense finally broke through on the offensive end, firing off six shots in the second half and getting two penalty corners in the final 35 minutes.

It wasn't until the 61st minute when Fairfield broke the scoreless streak. The Stags were awarded a penalty stroke and Erin Buckley fired it home for their first goal.

The Terriers quickly responded with two more goals before the final whistle to go up 6-1.

“I thought the team bounced back in the second half and really played well,” added coach Kane.

Julie de Paeuw led the way for the Stags firing off four shots with two on goal. Ann Burgoyne and Buckley each added a goal against the Terriers.

Caitlin Bennett faced 22 shots on cage and made five saves on the day.

Burgoyne finished her record breaking season with 19 goals and two assists, totaling 40 points. Her 19 goals tied a single-season record she set just last year, and 40 points breaks her previous single-season record of 39 that she also set last season.

Coach Kane commented on the season saying that “it was a tremendous year for this team; they really came together and played well. We went from fourth to first in the MAAC and that is something we are very proud of.”
