Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn.— The Fairfield University field hockey team dropped its final game of the regular season to Quinnipiac, 5-4 in overtime.
Fairfield finished the season with a 7-9 overall record including 3-3 against MAAC opponents. Despite the loss, the team clinched a spot in the MAAC Championships. The Stags finished tied for fourth place with Siena, but because Fairfield beat Siena during the season, the Stags owned the tiebreaker and earned themselves a spot in the tournament.
Sunday's game started out well for the Stags as they held a 2-0 advantage just eight minutes into the game. Julie de Paeuw scored her fifth goal of the season just 5:42 into the game. Then under three minutes later, Ann Burgoyne received a pass from Ruth Smalbraak and fired a shot to give the Stags a two goal lead.
The next two goals came from the Bobcats, but Fairfield would tack on a third before the end of the half. Burgoyne notched her second goal of the day off a penalty corner with one minute remaining in the first.
Out of the break, Burgoyne completed her hat trick when she collected a pass from de Paeuw and beat the keeper.
But their two goal lead would not last as the Bobcats tied the game in the 67th minute to force overtime. Six minutes into extra time Dayna Barlow scored the game winning goal for Quinnipiac.
Caitlin Bennett played nearly 76 minutes today in cage and recorded four saves against the Bobcats. For the season she racked up 81 saves and posted a 2.90 goals against average.
The Stags outshot the Bobcats 13-10 and had nine penalty corners on the day.
Burgoyne finished the regular season with 17 goals and 35 points. Second on the team in points was the freshman Smalbraak who totaled five goals and five assists for 15 points.
Fairfield will play at least one more game this season, as the number four seed they will face top-seeded Monmouth University in the first round of the MAAC Championship Tournament. The opening round will be played on Friday, November 6.
