Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team dropped its first road contest of the season on Sunday in a 4-0 loss at Harvard. The Stags drop to 4-5 on the season heading into MAAC play next weekend.
Much of the game was controlled by Harvard and the scoring came early for the Crimson. Just under seven minutes into the game, Hannah Wellington scored for Harvard to give them a 1-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later, Fairfield would try to answer when Ruth Smalbraak took a penalty corner to set up an excellent Julie de Paeuw shot that was knocked away by the Harvard keeper.
In the 27th minute Harvard would tack on their second goal of the day. Madison Jung received a pass from Sarah Finnemore and made a quick spin move before firing a shot to the far post to go up 2-0. Fairfield would head into the halftime break down two goals looking to turn things around.
Harvard quickly made the score 3-0 after Kathleen Young one-timed a Marissa Balleza pass right into an open net. It wouldn't take long for the Crimson to find their fourth goal of the day. In the 45th minute, Young again received an excellent pass from Balleza and beat the keeper for her second goal of the afternoon.
Fairfield was unable to score for just the second time all season. The Stags managed only six shots for the game against a Harvard defense that has now produced three shutouts on the season. The Crimson controlled most of the game firing 14 shots and taking seven penalty corners to just four for Fairfield.
De Paeuw led the way for the visitors with three shots, all on goal. Erin Buckley added two and Jamie Appelberg had one.
Caitlin Bennett got the start in cage and played 55 minutes before Emma Singer took over to close the game out. Each keeper had one save on the day.
The Stags will return home for their first ever MAAC game when they host Monmouth at University Field. The game is set to take place on Saturday, October 10 at 2:00 pm.
