Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team had a dominant outing on Sunday afternoon and claimed their second MAAC victory of the season with a 6-1 win over Siena. 19 Stags saw the field on Sunday afternoon, as it was a true team effort.
Fairfield controlled the game from the onset, but didn't see their first points until the 31st minute. Kaitlyn Taddeo knocked in her first goal of the season with a pass from fellow senior Emily McCauley.
Just 26 seconds later, Jaclyn Gallagher scored the second goal for the Stags. She received a pass from Ruth Smalbraak and was able to beat the keeper to put Fairfield up 2-0 heading into halftime.
Out of the break, Ann Burgoyne got the scoring started when she and Kaitlyn Taddeo found themselves on the counter attack. Taddeo passed to Burgoyne in front of the net and made it count.
Smalbraak then got on the board twice in less than a minute. In the 44th minute she rifled a shot from the top of the circle and beat the keeper. In the 45th minute she collected a loose ball, turned around, and shot the ball right into the back of the net.
The final goal of the day came from senior Elizabeth Thiroway who made her first career start on Sunday. She found herself open at the top of the circle and fired a shot that found its way past the keeper. The Stags would go on to win 6-1.
The seniors made a huge impact in their final home game. All four seniors started the game for the Stags, and they accounted for two goals and two assists on the day.
Caitlin Bennett started for Fairfield and posted a shutout in her 53 minutes of action. The junior also posted four saves on the day.
Fairfield outshot Siena 34-13 and had twice the number of penalty corners, 10-5.
The Stags prepare to close out the regular season this week with two final MAAC contests. Fairfield will travel to in-town rival Sacred Heart on Friday and then Quinnipiac on Sunday.
