ONEONTA, N.Y. -- After more than 250 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Fairfield University men's soccer team finally yielded a goal. And that goal was the difference as the Stags dropped a 1-0 decision against the University of New Hampshire this afternoon. The match was the second for both teams in the Mayor's Cup, hosted by Hartwick College.

The game's lone goal came midway through the second half when New Hampshire was awarded one of its three corner kicks on the day. The ball was inserted into the middle of the box where Connor Pauley won control. David Schlatter gained control after Pauley's play and finished the play with a shot that beat goalkeeper Matt Turner. It was the first goal allowed by Turner.

The two teams had ample opportunities especially late in the game. Fairfield made several runs at the goal including late shots from Jake Zuniga and George Newton. But each, New Hampshire goalkeeper Ryan Carpenter was in position to make the save. Carpenter ended the game with five saves, four of which came in the second half. Turner ended the match with six saves, making three stops in both halves.

The game was evenly played for the most part as both teams managed nine shots. And, the shot total was even more equal when you consider both squads had three in the first half and six more in the second half.

The Stags finished their season-opening three-game road swing with a 1-1-1 record and now looks forward to playing its home opener on Friday, September 12. Fairfield will welcome intrastate foe Yale University for a 7 pm match at Lessing Field.
