Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw with Hartwick College in the first round of the Mayor's Cup Tournament. The Stags have not yielded a goal this season, starting the year with a 1-0 win over Army before keeping Hartwick scoreless.
Defense dominated this game from the onset as both teams had trouble finding any offensive flow. The Hawks managed the only two shots of the first half, one of which forced Matt Turner to make a save.
The second half saw more offensive pace as both teams created opportunities especially late in the half. Each team took three shots over the final 13 minutes of regulation. Kalle Ronn started the flurry with a header that resulted in Tom Buckner making a save. Just a minute later, Ryan Perkins pushed a shot toward goal that went wide.
Hartwick put together a pair of shots in less than a minute but the Stags defense did not allow either attempt to reach the goal. Fairfield's Steven Valente took the last Fairfield shot in regulation with under three minutes remaining. Hartwick made it interesting with a shot right before the final horn but it also went wide of its target.
In overtime, the Stags recorded a shot in each of the two periods, one by Jake Zuniga in the first overtime and one by Ben Wignall in the second overtime. Wignall's shot was on goal but Buckner was equal once again.
The Stags will finish up the two-game tournament with a Sunday afternoon game against New Hampshire.
