Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Fairfield University volleyball team closed out action at the Brown Invitational with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) loss to Liberty this afternoon.
Freshman Megan Theiller, the reigning ECAC and MAAC Rookie of the Week, had 13 digs and nine kills, just missing a double-double. Senior Marilyn Peizer also had nine kills while adding three digs and a block.
Senior libero Camille Coffey tallied 15 digs on the day, including the 900th of her career. Coffey, who was named to the Brown Invitational All-Tournament Team, has 904 career digs and is on pace to become the 14th Stag in program history to reach the 1,000-career dig milestone.
Sophomore Bella Guanciale added a season-high 10 digs while rookie Sydney Buckley had 11 digs. Junior Maddie FitzPatrick tallied four total blocks, including three solo stops, and three kills.
Sophomore Megan O'Sullivan chipped in with five kills while Lindsay Weaver had six kills. Setter Carsen Mata had 26 assists, eight digs, and three aces. She moved into ninth all-time in career digs, posting the 1,144th of her career.
Liberty (9-4) led from the start of the first set, posting the first four points of the match. The Flames pushed out to a 10-3 lead which was all the room they needed as they went on to the 25-17 win. In the second set, Fairfield opened up a 14-10 advantage on a kill by FitzPatrick. Liberty countered with a 6-2 run to knot the frame at 16-16. After exchanging points, the Flames used a 5-1 run to break away from the Stags in the 25-19 win. In the final set, Liberty opened up an 18-13 lead behind an 8-3 run. The Flames staved off the Stags and went on to the 25-18 win.
Fairfield (4-6) has concluded non-league play. The two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Stags will begin defense of their titles at home next weekend. Iona visits Alumni Hall on September 20 at 1pm followed by Manhattan on September 21 at 1pm.
