Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Fairfield University volleyball team fell to NC State 3-1 (25-19, 13-25, 19-25, 16-25) this afternoon at the UNC Wilmington Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Classic. Senior Caitlin Stapleton led the Stags with 10 kills while Carsen Mata had a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.
Two other Stags had double digit digs as senior Camille Coffey tallied 20 digs while junior Hadley Orr had 11 digs.
Sophomore Megan O'Sullivan had five total blocks to go along with four kills while Maddie FitzPatrick had four total blocks and four kills.
Fairfield took the first set of the day by a winning margin of 25-19. In the second set, NC State jumped out to a 19-9 lead and went on to a 25-13 win.
In the third frame, Fairfield pulled within 8-7, but the Wolfpack countered with an 8-1 run. The Stags did not back down. Orr came through with a kill and followed that with an ace to help get a 4-0 run started which pulled Fairfield within 19-16. NC State's Rachel Buckley stopped the run with a kill and the Wolfpack went on to the 25-19 win. In the fourth set, Stapleton pulled the Stags within 13-11 on a kill, but NC State countered with 9-2 run. The Wolfpack (1-1) went on to the 25-16 win.
Fairfield (0-3) closes out tournament play this evening when it takes on Coastal Carolina at 5pm.
