Fairfield Places 190 Student-Athletes on MAAC Academic Honor Roll

EDISON, N.J. – Fairfield University had 190 student-athletes named to the 2013-14 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll as announced by the league this morning. It was the second-highest number of student-athletes included in the league.

To be eligible for the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The Honor Roll is open to both full-time and associate members in the MAAC. All 25 sports that the conference sponsors are represented.

Marist College led the list of honored student-athletes with 235, followed by Fairfield with 190 and Iona College with 168. Newcomers to the league, Monmouth University and Quinnipiac University each had 167 student-athletes named to the Honor Roll. Canisius College added 163, followed by Rider University (151), Siena College (147), Manhattan College (139), Niagara University (123) and Saint Peter's University (104). Among the associate members, Robert Morris University, which competes in field hockey and women's rowing, has the most with 49 student-athletes.

Fairfield had a strong year in the classroom. During the fall and spring semesters combined, there were 607 grade point averages that registered at 3.0 or above. The Stags were included on the Fairfield University Dean's List 305 times between the fall and spring semesters. Three Stags received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors and were placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. But, perhaps, the most notable individual achievement came when it was announced the swimmer Kevin Greener would give the Valedictory Address at the 2014 Fairfield University Undergraduate Commencement ceremony. Greener graduated with a degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and had a 3.86 GPA.

In May, seven Fairfield University athletic teams were cited for excellence in the classroom by receiving the NCAA Public Recognition Award, the most of any MAAC institution. Men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's lacrosse, men's swimming, and men's tennis collected the award by achieving an Academic Progress Rate (APR) that ranked among the top 10 percent in their respective sport.
