FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team fell to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Marist College, 13-6, this afternoon on Lessing Field. The loss snapped a six game win streak and placed the Stags second in the conference.
Senior Jenna Slowey netted three goals for the Stags, who also received goals from senior Melanie Raso, junior Jamie Leone, and rookie Riley Hellstein.
Scoring started early as Allison Gionta gave Marist a 1-0 lead only 51 seconds into the first half. The Red Foxes scored two more goals, at 28:28 and 26:46, before Hellstein found Slowey to put the Stags on the board at 21:46. One minute later, Marist's Kara McHugh scored her second goal of the game, to make the score 4-1. Fairfield answered with back-to-back goals by Leone and Slowey at 19:58 and 19:16. The first was assisted by Hellstein while the second was assisted by Alex Fehmel.
The Red Foxes (12-2; 6-0 MAAC) responded with their own set of consecutive goals at 17:15 and 13:59. About one minute later, Colleen Reynolds found Slowey for her third goal of the game, pushing the score to 6-4. In the remaining 12 minutes, Marist went on a 3-0 run to give the Red Foxes a 9-4 advantage into halftime.
The Stags came out strong in the second half, scoring the first goal at 26:38. The goal was netted by Hellstein off a free position shot. Play continued until Marist's Kirsten Viscount scored at 23:22. The score then became 11-5 when the Red Foxes' Tierney Larson found McHugh at 20:31. Fairfield's last goal of the game came at 12:45 when Raso scored off a pass from Leone. In the remaining 12:45, Marist scored two more goals, sealing a 13-6 win for the Red Foxes.
Sophomore Chelsey Sidaras manned the net for the Stags, making four saves, while Marist's Abigail Witczak tallied 11.
Despite being slightly outshot 27-22 by the Red Foxes, both teams had an even 16-16 advantage in ground balls. Raso had a team-high six shots for Fairfield.
For Marist, McHugh had four goals, one ground ball, and two draw controls. Gionta tallied two goals with one assist for three points.
Fairfield (10-4; 5-1 MAAC) continues action on the road, stopping at Monmouth on April 23 before heading to Canisius on April 26.
