Rowing Participates In Iona Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University rowing teams finally had a turn on the water as the men's and women's squads competed at the Iona Invitational on Sunday afternoon. It was the first competition for both teams this spring.

On the women's side, the varsity 8 raced twice and finished third 6:53.06 with a time of 7:17.41 and followed up with a time of 7:17.41 for a second-place finish. The team included coxswain Nicole Karwashan, Katherine Pitz, Carmen Fox, Liz Franger, Casey Bowler, Maria Levano, Gabby Piatek, Chloe Scherpa, and Jeannette Eckelman.

The second varsity 8 took third place on its first trip in the Invitational, sporting a time of 7:21.61, before finishing the day with a second-place run in 7:37.46. The entry included coxswain Nicole Antonucci, Amanda Murphy, Jaclyn Ozyjowski, Melissa Iannucci, Kim Ginsburg, Samantha Clifford, Megan DiBello, Sarah Bucklen, and Ashley Iannucci.

The varsity 4 also was in the water twice on Sunday, securing a first-place finish (7:59.81) and came back later with a third-place finish (8:19.93). The first crew was comprised by coxswain Morgan McKean, Colleen Sheridan, Victoria Vesce, Avery Adams, and Jaquie Moser. The second entry included coxswain Mikayla Daniels, Sam Matte, Claire Claussen, Kaitlyn Mazzucco, and Jaquie Moser.

The novice 8 was next up for the program and the unit was just edged out by Robert Morris. The Stags crossed the line in 7:46.95, less than a second off the pace set by Robert Morris (7:46.06). The shell included coxswain Liz Costanzo, Colleen Sheridan, Victoria Vesce, Briana Mullaney, Danni McKenna, Amanda McKenna, Sara Nardi, Katie Henderson, and Kassandra Mangan.

The final women's race that afternoon came with the novice 4 as the Stags captured first place with a time of 8:21.03, more than 20 seconds better than the runner up. Fairfield's entry consisted of coxswain Morgan McKean, Sarah Bucklen, Jaclyn Ozyjowski, Melissa Iannucci, and Ashley Iannucci.

The men's team placed six entries into the Invitational, beginning with the men's novice 8. The team, which included coxswain Grace Puksta, Mike Giuliana, John Cervone, Jack Carty, Chris Matthiessen, Matt Stevens, Pat Mills, James Laviolette, and Ryan Roche, grabbed second out of four entries with a time of 6:46.85. Lehigh won the event in 6:22.13.

The varsity 8 crossed the finish line fourth (6:25.04) behind the winning time of 6:00.18 by Fordham. The shell consisted of coxswain Olivia Vita, Tom Siddall, Luke Auger, Charlie Serpa, Floris-Jan Floris, Chris Caitri, Alex Nowicki, Herbie Marache, and Bobby Lawler.

 The second varsity 8 just missed a first-place finish to Fordham as their time of 6:28.16 was just off the Rams 6:25.7. The entry was comprised coxswain Trent Domingos, Brendan Spearing, Cameron Shalkowski, Phil Falco, Travis Day, George Bellos, Kier Kaiser, Cameron Bowen, and Eddy Nilan.

The novice 4 was next up on the schedule and the Stags placed two boats in the race. The A boat ended the day with a time of 6:28.16 behind the efforts of coxswain Tim Valente, Pat Gannon, Devon Kenney, Nick Greco, and David Buckley. The B boat crossed the line in 7:14.44 as coxswain Colin Gilpatric paced Lev Macht-Greenberg, Dominick Guameri, John Driscoll, and Pat Haggerty.

The varsity 4 ended the afternoon with two entries as the A boat was fourth with a time of 7:40.20 with the work of coxswain Connor Kim, Sam Sullivan, Logan Hertlein, Jake Offermann, and Rob Preli. The B boat secured first place with a time of 7:18.25. Coxswain Olivia Vita, Brendan Spearing, Luke Auger, Charlie Serpa, and Eddy Nilan posted the time for the Stags.
