Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – A second-half surge by Siena College was the difference in the game as the Saints posted a 64-56 decision over the Fairfield University men's basketball team at Webster Bank Arena. The Saints overcame a six-point halftime deficit and trailed by as many as 11 in the opening 20 minutes.
Siena scored the first points of the game off its first possession, resulting in a jumper from Rob Poole just 29 seconds into the contest. Trailing by three points at 4-1, Fairfield would use a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a double-digit lead at 14-4 with 14:28 showing on the game clock.
Justin Jenkins scored four points and
Coleman Johnson added three as four different Stags put points on the board in that stretch.
The Saints came within five points following a three pointer by Ryan Oliver, making it an 18-13 game with 9:21 left. However, the Stags rebuilt their 10 point lead over the next three minutes at 27-17 after Johnson registered a pair of free throws. The advantage would reach 11 points following a three pointer from
Marcus Gilbert which raised the score to 31-20. Fairfield would settle for a six-point halftime lead at 31-25.
The Stags scored the first basket of the second half to go up by eight points at 33-25, but the Saints responded with a 12-2 run over the next nine minutes to take the lead at 37-35 with 10:53 remaining, the team's first lead since a 4-1 edge. Bisping and Marquis Wright each scored four points in that run with Wright's second basket pushing Siena in front.
Justin Jenkins put Fairfield back into the lead by making three of four free throws over the next minute, making the score 40-37 with 10:08 remaining. Stags forward
Amadou Sidibe continued the Fairfield run with a layup to make the lead three points at 40-37. Rob Poole was fouled on a three-point shot following Sidibe's layup and converted each attempt to tie the game at 40-40.
The two teams would remained tied at 42-42 and 44-44 before Siena would take control following a three-point play by Bisping and another free throw by Lavon Long that gave the visitors a 48-44 advantage. Fairfield would come as close as three points during the final four minutes and trailed by just four points with 33 seconds remaining at 58-54. Poole made six free throws in the final 30 seconds to keep Fairfield from making any comeback bid.
Maurice Barrow came off the bench to pace the Fairfield offense with 15 points, while Jenkins was the Stags' other double-digit scorer with 13 points. Barrow also paced the team with seven rebounds. Bisping and Poole each scored a game-high 19 points to lead Siena College.
Fairfield does not play again until it hosts Canisius College on February 1 at Webster Bank Arena. Game time is slated for 1 pm.
