Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's basketball put forth a balanced attack but could not overcome 11 three-point field goals by Iona College as the Gaels posted an 84-75 win over the Stags on Friday night. Four Fairfield student-athletes reached double figures in the game, led by 19 points from
Maurice Barrow.
Sean Grennan (16 points),
Coleman Johnson (12), and
Justin Jenkins (12) also reached double digits.
Iona started the game with a 7-2 run over the opening three minutes but the Stags fought back with six straight points to take their first lead of the game at 8-7. Four of those points came from Johnson, including the basket that put Fairfield into the lead. A.J. English made a three-point shot to regain the edge for Iona and then followed with a pair of free throws to push the lead back to four points at 12-8. Fairfield would use a 6-2 spurt to tie the game as
Justin Jenkins and
Sean Grennan wrapped three-point field goals around a basket from David Laury to make the score 14-14 with 13:25 remaining.
English struck from behind the three-point arc to once again recapture the lead at 17-14 with 13:14 on the clock. Fairfield stayed within a couple of possessions over the next few minutes and came within a basket at 29-27 after Barrow's put back basket. The Gaels answered with a 10-2 run that pushed the lead to double figures for the first time at 39-29 with 3:52 remaining. Iona would take an eight-point lead into the locker room at 46-38.
The second half started with a basket from
Amadou Sidibe to bring the visitors within six points at 46-40. The Stags would pull even closer after Jenkns' basket made the score 52-47 at the 14:47 mark. The lead remained at five points after Sidibe made two free throws for a 57-52 score with 12:02 left in the second half. The game turned on the next Iona possession when Tre Bowman converted a four-point play with a three pointer plus a free throw that nearly doubled Iona's lead to 61-52 with 11:29 remaining.
Iona would eventually build its advantage to 14 points at 74-60 with four minutes remaining. Fairfield made a late run but came no closer than seven points on two occasions – 74-67 and 77-70, the last of which came with a minute remaining.
Three Iona starters scored 20 points in the game as A.J. English netted 25 points followed by Bowman with 24 points and David Laury with 21 points. Sean Armand, the Gaels' leading scorer, was held scoreless for most of the game and finished with two points, both of which came from the free throw line.
Fairfield plays its next two games at home, beginning on Thursday, January 16 when the team hosts Niagara University at 8:30 pm. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3 live from Webster Bank Arena.
