Field Hockey Edges Hofstra 3-2 in Home Opener

The Fairfield University field hockey team edged Hofstra University, 3-2, this afternoon at University Field. Junior Felicitas Heinen scored two goals while rookie Julie de Paeuw scored her first collegiate goal in the Stags' home opener.

Fairfield took an early lead when de Paeuw scored off a penalty corner just 3:33 into the game. Hofstra answered with a goal by Jonel Boileau, off a rebound about three yards out, at 14:32. After two blocked shots off a penalty corner, the Pride took a 2-1 lead when Stella Schoen backhanded a goal at 19:24. Hofstra's remaining three shots in the first half were saved by freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett.

The Stags got off to a similar start in the second half with a penalty corner which resulted in a goal by Heinen at 38:35. That game-tying goal was assisted by Emily Leo and Valerie Buurma. Ten minutes later, Heinen put Fairfield ahead to stay by netting the game-winner off a penalty stroke at 48:35. Heinen finished with two goals and an assist for a five-point day.

Bennett tallied nine saves while Hofstra's Kaitlyn De Turo totaled six. Despite being slightly out-shot 15-12, the Stags had a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

Fairfield (2-0) continues play on the road, stopping at Princeton University on September 7 and Saint Joseph's University on September 8.
