FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University field hockey team defeated Monmouth University, 6-1, this afternoon at University Field. Junior
Felicitas Heinen and freshman
Ann Burgoyne had two goals apiece.
Scoring got off to an early start when Burgoyne netted the first goal by beating the Hawks' goalkeeper only eight minutes into the first half. The Stags continued to dominate play scoring two goals in about two minutes. The first goal was scored by
Shealyn Testa off a penalty corner, giving Fairfield a 2-0 lead at 26:29. The second goal was netted by Burgoyne off a rebound which gave the Stags a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half started much like the first when Heinen scored her first goal of the game off a penalty stroke at 36:12. About four minutes later,
Julie de Paeuw scored from the left side, off a pass from
Hillary Fitts, bringing the score to 5-0. Monmouth answered with a goal by Amanda Schoenfeld, off a cross from Lauren Weller, at 45:03. The Stags countered with a final goal by Heinen off a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by
Valerie Buurma and
Emily McCauley.
Goalkeeper
Caitlin Bennett faced six shots on the day, while Monmouth's Amanda Westerweller tallied eight saves. The Stags out-shot the Hawks 20-9 and each team had four penalty corners.
Fairfield (7-2) will continue play this Sunday when they host Columbia University at 1pm. Sunday's game will be the team's Play 4 A Cure game where the team will continue its fundraising efforts for breast cancer awareness. Over the last three years, Fairfield University field hockey has raised over $40,000 for the cause in conjunction with the Fairfield County Field Hockey Association.
