FAIRFIELD, Conn. - It's never dull when the Fairfield University volleyball team meets up with Siena College. Tonight, the Saints rallied from two sets down to defeat the Stags 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-12) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Alumni Hall.
Junior Marilyn Peizer recorded her first career double-double for the Stags finishing with 14 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Peizer also tied a career-high with four total blocks. Red-shirt senior Carsen Mata recorded her second-straight double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs.
Freshman Megan O'Sullivan posted 11 kills on .474 hitting and four total blocks while junior Caitlin Stapleton added 12 kills and four total blocks. Sophomore Hadley Orr chipped in with nine kills, 11 digs, three aces, and two assists while senior Hayley Moyer registered seven kills on .389 hitting.
Junior Camille Coffey notched 13 digs while freshman Bella Guanciale recorded 14 digs.
Siena (4-9; 3-0 MAAC) handed Fairfield a rare loss in Alumni Hall as the Stags saw their 19-match home winning streak against MAAC opponents snapped. Entering the evening, the last time Fairfield had lost to a league opponent at home was on September 18, 2011 against Niagara. Fairfield is 75-6 against MAAC opponents in Alumni Hall since 2003.
Coffey opened the match by serving six straight points to give Fairfield (3-9; 1-1 MAAC) the lead. Siena narrowed the gap to 20-19 but a kill by Stapleton and an ace by Coffey helped return the momentum back to the Stags who went on to the 25-21 win.
Siena erased an early seven-point deficit in the second set to tie it, 19-19, on a block by Meghann Wright and Christina Monroe. After a Saints attack error, Moyer came through with an ace and O'Sullivan followed with a kill to swing momentum once again. Fairfield hung on for the 25-21 win.
In the third set, the Saints came out swinging taking a 13-6 lead to start. Siena controlled the rest of the way in the 25-16 win. Siena took an early in the fourth set as well, pulling ahead 12-7. The Stags clawed back, pulling within 21-19 but Siena closed things out with a 4-1 run to even the match at two sets apiece.
The deciding set featured seven ties and four lead changes. Trailing 8-6, Orr stepped to the line and delivered consecutive aces to tie the frame. Moyer followed with a kill to give Fairfield the lead, but the two teams would trade the next few points. With the scored tied at 11-11, Rachel Stoklosa would put Siena ahead to stay with a kill as the Saints eked out the 15-12 win.
Stoklosa had 13 kills for the Saints while Taylor Akana registered a double-double with a match-high 16 kills and 17 digs. Jacqueline Skeen added 11 kills on .524 hitting.
Siena held a slight 57-56 advantage in kills and a 7-6 advantage in blocks. The Saints had 10 services while the Stags had six. Fairfield posted 68 digs while Siena had 53 digs.
Fairfield takes MAAC play on the road this weekend as it travels to Manhattan on September 28 and Iona on September 29.
