The Fairfield University women's soccer team opened the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with a 4-0 win over host Saint Peter's University on Wednesday afternoon. The victory, the Stags fifth in six games, improves Fairfield's record to 5-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Peacocks fall to 2-6-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in MAAC action.
Sydney Arestivo (Northport, N.Y.) scored her first career goal in the 11th minute, netting a pass from Shannon Fay (Sayville, N.Y.). It would stand up as the game-winning tally, the second game in a row that a Stags rookie has scored the game-winner with their first collegiate goal. Fairfield quickly pushed the lead to 2-0 as Megan O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.) played a ball to Ashley Small (Melville, N.Y.) for the junior's sixth goal of the year 91 seconds later.
Small was in the middle of the Stags third goal, which came 19:42 in the period, when she was pulled down in the box. Nikki Stanton (North Bend, Wash.) converted the ensuing PK, her second of the year, to give Fairfield a 3-0 lead that it would take into the intermission. Molly Moran (Monson, Mass.) wrapped up the scoring in the 71st minute as she took a pass from Torey Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and knocked it home with her left foot from 20-yards out.
Fairfield outshot Saint Peter's 17-2 in the game and Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) was forced to make just one save to earn her second consecutive clean sheet. Molly O'Halloran made six saves in net for Saint Peter's. The Stags finished with 11 corner kicks and six fouls. Saint Peter's was whistled for eight fouls and did not attempt a corner kick.
The Stags return to action on Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host MAAC foe Marist College at 5 p.m. on Lessing Field.
