Field Hockey Defeats Lehigh 2-1 in Season Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa.
- The Fairfield University field hockey team defeated Lehigh University 2-1, this evening at Ulrich Field. Felicitas Heinen took five shots on goal while rookie goalkeeper Caitlin Bennett made four saves in her collegiate debut.

Fairfield got on the board first as Heinen scored her first goal of the season 30:53 into the first half. The goal was scored directly off a penalty corner and was assisted by Valerie Buurma and Emily McCauley. The Stags continued to dominate play and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Fairfield started off strong in the second half with a penalty corner by McCauley which led to a shot by Heinen. The Mountain Hawks answered shortly after with a shot by Erin Ricker but a save by Bennett prevented a goal.

The Mountain Hawks tied the game at 62:36 when Lindsey Schott redirected a pass from Ricker. Nearly four minutes later, Kaitlyn Taddeo returned the lead to the Stags as she broke in on goal and beat the goalkeeper who came out to challenge.

Bennett faced five shots on the day, stopping four while Lehigh's Julia Ward made eight saves. The Stags out-shot Lehigh 17-9 and had a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners. Freshmen Julie de Paeuw and Ann Burgoyne made their mark each totaling one shot on goal.

Fairfield (1-0) returns to action on September 4 when it hosts Hofstra at 3pm on University Field. The Stags hit the road for their next two games, stopping at Princeton University on September 7 and Saint Joseph's University on September 8.
