Small Scores In Women's Soccer Loss At Wagner

The Fairfield University women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to host Wagner College Sunday in Staten Island, N.Y. The loss drops the Stags to 0-2, while the Seahawks improve to 2-0.

Wagner took an advantage early, as Amanda Buck put home a shot from 30 yards out, unassisted, just 19:28 into the first-half. Despite outshooting Wagner 9-5 in the first half, Fairfield could not find the back of the net, and the Seahawks took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The Seahawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute when Alyssa Willard fed Sydney McCarthy to knock home a shot from 35-yards outs. Ashley Small would answer 14:27 later as she tallied the Stags first goal of the season. Nikki Stanton fed Small on the right-side and the junior found the back of the net from eight-yards out. The Stags made a late effort to tally the equalizer, but where whistled for their eighth offside of the game with 67 ticks on the clock.

Kathleen Early made four saves in net for the Stags, with all of them coming in the second-half of play. Katie Marcy stopped seven shots for Wagner, five in the first-half, to earn the win.

Wagner outshot the Stags 14-13 for the game and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks, with five in the second-half. The Seahawks were also whistled for 11 fouls, as compared to the Stags five. Wagner was called for just one offsides in the contest.

Fairfield returns to action on Friday, August 30, when it travels to Stony Brook for a 5 p.m. contest. It is the Stags third of four road games to open the 2013 season.
