Chloe Mangan scored with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but Morgan O'Reilly struck with 42 ticks left in the extra period to give the University of Connecticut a 12-11 win over host Fairfield University. The loss drops the Stags to 3-4 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 5-0.
Connecticut used a five-goal run over a 15 minute span in the first-half to break a 3-3 tie and take an 8-3 advantage with 1:53 to play before intermission. Kelly Fenton cut into that deficit for Fairfield with seven seconds left in the period to make the score 8-4 at halftime.
Melanie Raso struck 59 seconds into the second-half to get Fairfield within three, 8-5, but was answered 1:01 later by Kacey Pippitt. The Stags rattled off three straight at that points, closing to within a tally, 9-8 on Mangan's goal with 17:19 remaining in regulation. Lauren Kahn scored her third of the game with 15:04 to play to put the Huskies back up two, 10-8. Just shy of 10 minutes later Caitlin Townsend again got Fairfield within a score, netting an unassisted goal, while Sara McBride answered 13 seconds later to push the lead back to two, 11-9. Courtney Chmil converted a free position shot with 2:26 to play in regulation to make it 11-10 and setup the game-tying goal from Mangan.
Mangan was one of four Stags to score two goals in the game, and led the team with three points as she also added the team's lone assist. Raso, Townsend, and Jenna Slowey all struck twice for Fairfield. Chmil and Mangan both collected four draw controls in the game to lead Fairfield, which finished with 12 as a team.
Chelsey Sidaras played the final 36 minutes in net for the Stags, taking the loss. She stopped six shots while allowing four goals. Katie Keenan played the first-half for Fairfield, giving up eight goals and making four saves.
Marya Fratoni earned the win in net for UConn, minding the cage for the final 26:35 and allowing four goals and stopping four shots. Shannon Nee started and allowed seven goals, with five saves, in 39:25 of action.
Kahn and Catherine Gross both had hat tricks for the Huskies, who also received three point efforts from Pippitt and O'Reilly, who both had two goals and an assist.
Both squads committed 16 turnovers in the contest, with UConn being whistled for 32 fouls as compared to the Stags 26. The Stags had a 17-15 advantage in ground balls and a 25-24 shot advantage.
The Stags close out a three-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon when they host Quinnipiac at 3 p.m.
