NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened the 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) season with a split against Iona College, winning the first game by a 3-2 score and falling in the second game by a 6-2 count. The Stags overall record remained at .500, finishing the week with a 12-12 mark.

Fairfield scored the first runs of the opening game by scoring twice in the third inning. Kristen Filicia started the inning with a base hit and went to second with a stolen base. Lauren Liseth walked to put runners on first and second with both runners moving up a base following a passed ball. Filicia came home when Lauren Filicia's grounder was mishandled to send home the first run. Nicole Capra added a base hit later in the inning to push the score to 2-0.

Iona tied the score in the bottom of the inning with Katie Jansson providing the key hit - a two-run double that made it a 2-2 game. The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh inning when Liseth was intentionally walked to start the frame. Rae Ball reached base on a fielder's choice that moved Liseth over to second base. Lauren Filicia added a single to load the bases, setting up Nicole Capra's sacrifice fly that brought home the deciding run.

Ball went the distance to earn her fifth win by scattering eight hits and fanning three hitters.

In the second game, Iona scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning which starting pitcher Carly Argyle made stand as she went the distance to earn her fourth win of the season. Fairfield's two runs came off a single run in the first and another in the fourth inning. Lauren Filicia brought the first run home with a single to right field, while Kimi Kurata added the second run off a solo home run.
