The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 overtime decision to Hofstra University on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops the Stags to 1-1 on the year while the Pride improve to 2-0.
Melanie Raso scored 36 seconds into the overtime period, after Addie Reilly controlled the opening draw, for a 7-6 Stags lead. The advantage lasted only 42 seconds as Jill Maier netted a goal for Hofstra to tie the score once again, 7-7. Brittain Altomare provided the decisive tally, her fourth point of the game, with 97 seconds to play in overtime, scoring unassisted for the 8-7 advantage.
Raso and Chloe Mangan both scored twice for the Stags, who also received goals from Amanda Best, Caitlin Townsend and Courtney Chmil. Best, and Jamie Leone had assists in the contest.
Katie Keenan minded the net for the entire 66 minutes for the Stags, making eight saves. Kelsey Gregerson earned the win for Hofstra as she made six saves.
Fairfield held a 10-9 advantage in draw controls, with Reilly collecting a game-high five. Hofstra outshot the stags 24-17 for the day and had a 25-23 edge in ground balls. Olivia Ziegler had a team-high four ground balls for Fairfield.
Raso wasted little time getting the Stags out in front, putting home a Leone pass 36 seconds into the game. Mangan followed 27 seconds later and the Stags were in front 2-0. The game settled for the next 14 minutes until Best fed Townsend with 14:20 to play before the break for a 3-0 advantage.
Hofstra broke through with an Emily Considine tally at 10:54, but Mangan answered that 25 seconds later to push the Stags lead back to three, 4-1. Brittain Altomare cut the Pride deficit to two with her first of the game 5:35 before halftime. Considine struck with 42 ticks left in the period and the Stags took a 4-3 lead to the break.
Courtney Chmil gave the Stags a 5-3 lead early in the second-half, with her first of the game. Julia Riemer scored for the Pride at the 25:04 mark, which Amanda Best answered at 24:20 for a 6-4 Fairfield advantage. That would be the Stags final goal of regulation however. Maier scored at 23:31 to bring the Pride within a tally, and Reimer's second of the day tied the score 6-6 with 12:43 to play in regulation to set up the extra period.
Considine had two goals, four ground balls and three caused turnovers to pace the Pride. Altomare led the team with four points, as she scored twice and added two assists.
Fairfield concludes its season opening three-game road trip on Saturday when it travels to Piscataway, N.J. to take on Rutgers.
