The Fairfield University men's lacrosse team plays its 2013 home opener on Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Alumni Field, when the United States Naval Academy visits campus. The Stags, who moved up to #15 in the national polls this week, are 1-0, while the Midshipmen, who received votes in both polls, are 2-0 on the season. Tuesday's contest marks the first-ever between the two institutions in men's lacrosse.
The Stags opened the 2013 season with an 8-4 win over Bryant, on the road, rallying from a 5-3 deficit. Fairfield outscored the Bulldogs 5-1 over the final 15:20 as Jordan Greenfield netted three of his game-high four goals in the final quarter. The Stags won two of their three face-offs in the final quarter. Jack Murphy backstopped a defense that allowed just three goals in each half by making 11 saves in his first Division I start. Toby Armour had a team-high three caused turnovers in his Stag debut.
Saturday's victory improved the Fairfield opening day record to 13-8 all-time and 4-1 under the direction of head coach Andy Copelan. The Stags also moved to 25-11 under Copelan in games decided by two or fewer goals.
Navy has opened the season with a pair of wins, defeating VMI 20-7 and Detroit 11-7. Tucker Hall and Austin Heneveld each have collected eight points in those games, with Hall notching a team-best four goals and Heneveld handing out a team-high five assists. They are two of 14 players that have scored a goal for the Midshipmen, who have 17 assists on their 31 goals thus far. Nolan Hickey has started both games in cage for the Midshipmen and has made 12 saves in 105 minutes. He enters Tuesday's game with a .522 save percentage and a 6.29 GAA. Navy is 29-52 at the face-off X and has an 83-56 ground-ball edge on the year. Navy has two man-up goals, 2-8, as well as a pair of man-down goals and is clearing at 84 percent.
