Men's Basketball Falls To Iona At Home, 83-72

Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Maurice Barrow recorded his first double-double of the season with a career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds as the Fairfield University men's basketball dropped an 83-72 decision to Iona College at Webster Bank Arena.

Iona used the three-point shot to take an early head, all coming from A.J. English. After Marcus Gilbert gave the Stags a 3-1 lead on his first field goal attempt of the game, English made three straight three-point field goals all on consecutive possessions to push the Gaels in front 10-3. Iona's lead reached double figures when David Laury laid the ball in the basket at the 15:44 mark to make it a 16-5 game.

The lead remained in double digits at 17-7, but it was that point that the Fairfield offense began to click, enabling the home team to make a significant run at the deficit. Coleman Johnson started -the stretch with back-to-back jumpers that closed the lead to six points at 17-11. Laury made one of two free throws to temporarily halt the run, but Fairfield's pressure would not relent.

Fairfield used the long-range jumper to completely erase the deficit as KJ Rose started things off with a three-point field goal. Maurice Barrow put the Stags in front for the first time in nine-plus minutes with back-to-back three pointers that pushed the home team in front at 20-18. A layup by Mike Poole tied the game for the Gaels, but Lincoln Davis gave Fairfield its fourth straight three-point basket to make it a 23-20 game with 8:26 on the clock.

The Stags lead would reach five points when Davis made one of two charity tosses for a 31-26 lead with 5:36 on the clock. Iona responded with 10 straight points with seven points coming from Sean Armand that put Iona back in front, 36-31. The Gaels would eventually improve their advantage by as many as 11 points in the final minute before settling for a 46-37 halftime lead.

Isaiah Williams came out and scored the first points of the second half to regain a double-figure lead for Iona at 48-37. The Stags would come within a single-digit deficit just one more time in the game after Rose's layup made the score 55-47 with 15:04 remaining. Sean Armand followed with a layup on the Gaels' next possession to make it a 10-point margin at 57-47 and Fairfield would not come any closer the rest of the way.

Fairfield forward Coleman Johnson just missed a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds, just two points of his career high set last season. Two other Fairfield student-athletes reached double digits with Rose netting 11 points and Lincoln Davis adding 10 points. Rose also played 37 minutes without committing a turnover, dishing off seven assists during his time on the court. Armand led all scorers with 28 points for the Gaels and also added seven assists.

The Stags will take to the road for its next game when they head south for a December 11 match up with Belmont College. The game is scheduled for a 7 pm (CST) tip off. Fairfield returns to Webster Bank for its final home game of the calendar year when it hosts Northeastern University on December 15 at 1 pm.
