UNCASVILLE, Conn. –
Marcus Gilbert scored a team-high 10 points and
Coleman Johnson added seven points and seven rebounds in the Fairfield University men's basketball team's 68-47 setback to the University of Richmond in the final game of the Naismith Hall of Fame Tip Off at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Fairfield took its only lead of the game on its second possession when Marcus Gilbert stepped to the free throw line and made two free throws for the game's first points. Cedrick Lindsay responded with a three-point field goal on Richmond's next possession, which started a 13-0 run that put the Spiders in front by double figures at 13-2 with 14:09 remaining in the first half.
The Stags broke the spell when Malcolm Gilbert posted a jumper that brought the deficit back to nine points. After Terry Allen answered for Richmond with a pair of free throws, Doug Chappell netted a three-point field goal that made it a 15-7 game at the 11:40 mark. Richmond gained control of the game after that point by using a 14-2 spurt over four minutes that raised the lead to 20 points at 29-9 with six minutes remaining in the first half. Fairfield would eventually trail by 19 points at halftime with both teams entering the locker room at 36-17.
The lead hovered around that number for most of the second half before Fairfield put together an 8-2 run over two-plus minutes that turned a 20-point deficit into a 14-point margin at 53-39 with seven minutes remaining. Richmond would eventually push the lead beyond 20 points later in the half and would finish the game with the 21-point win.
Malcolm Gilbert came off the bench to score nine points, grab four rebounds, and block three shots in 24 minutes for the Stags. Allen led all scorers with 16 points while ShawnDre' Jones and Derrick Williams each recorded 11 points for the Spiders.
The Stags will have five days before their next game, a Friday afternoon road match up with Providence College on November 29. The game will tip off at 12:30 pm and will be televised by the Fox 1 network.
