RIVERDALE, N.Y. --
Jon Clements picked up his second goal in as many games but it was not enough as the Fairfield University men's soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision to Manhattan College on the road. Clements took over the team lead with his fourth score of the season, giving the senior eight points on the season.
The Jaspers wasted little time in taking control of the game, as Andrew Santos put his team in the lead just 2:24 into the contest. Santos scored from five yards away, a shot that just eluded Fairfield goalkeeper
Joe Martin. Manhattan went up 2-0 in the 28th minute when Eugene Heerschap took advantage of a defensive miscue that gave him a one-on-one opportunity which he converted at 27:35.
The lead was cut in half in the 54th minute after Manhattan's defense was credited with an own goal, making the score 2-1 with just under 37 minutes remaining. The Jaspers regained their two goal lead 12 minutes later when Dan Laguna Kennedy converted a pass to the left side of the box. He accepted the pass and released a shot from 15 yards away that caught the corner of the goal.
Clements picked up the next Fairfield goal at 70:49, a play which was neatly set up by
Reco McLaren's pass. McLaren carried the ball several yards before he fed Clements who made a successful run down the right side of the pitch. He sent a shot to the lower corner that the Manhattan goalkeeper was unable to control.
Laguna Kennedy forced a turnover deep in Fairfield's end which he turned into a 4-1 Manhattan lead by sending a shot to the lower corner at 76:58. The final goal of the game came with just over five minutes remaining when Eli Bunton took advantage of a pass from Alex Shackley at 84:42.
Martin finished the game with two saves for the Stags, while Alex Coates McDowall made two stops for Manhattan.
Fairfield returns home for a Saturday night match up with Canisius College at Lessing Field. The game is scheduled for a 7 lead start.
