ALBANY, N.Y. - The Fairfield University field hockey team fell to No. 15 Albany, 6-1, this afternoon at Alumni Turf. Junior
Felicitas Heinen scored the goal for the Stags.
Action started early as Albany took the first shot of the game only 1:25 into the first half. The Stags answered with two back-to-back shots by
Shealyn Testa and
Julie de Paeuw, but came up short of netting a goal. The game remained scoreless until about 20 minutes in when Albany's Celia D'Agostino scored off a pass from Echo Bretz at 23:32. About eight minutes later, the Great Danes took a 2-0 lead when Kelly Bonner netted a goal off a pass from Paula Heuser. The game was 2-0 heading into halftime.
The second half started much like the first when Albany's Daphne Voormolen took the first shot off a penalty corner about two minutes in. Fairfield quickly answered with a shot from de Paeuw off a penalty corner by
Emily Leo.
At 41:36, Bonner scored her second goal of the game off a rebounded shot, making the score 3-0. About 11 minutes later, Albany took a 4-0 lead after Heuser scored from the right side of the circle.
The Great Danes' Molly Mariano scored off a scramble in front of the net at 59:03, making the score 5-0. Albany scored their final goal of the game at 60:36 off a penalty corner. Heinen put the Stags on the board when she netted a goal off of her own rebound from the right side of the circle at 65:56. Heinen's first shot, off a penalty corner by Leo, was blocked. Fairfield continued to battle for the rest of the second half but was unable to score. The final score of the game was 6-1.
Goalkeeper
Caitlin Bennett tallied six saves while Albany's Maxi Primus totaled two. Despite being out-shot, 18-7, the Stags and the Great Danes had an equal, 4-4, advantage in penalty corners.
Fairfield (10-5) will continue America East play on the road, stopping at No. 20 New Hampshire on November 1.
