Felicitas Heinen earned her second career hat trick while
Caitlin Bennett made four saves to record the shutout as the Fairfield University field hockey team posted a 5-0 win over America East foe UMass Lowell at University Field. The victory pushed the Stags' overall record to 10-4 and improved the team's conference record to 2-1.
The game started off at a fast pace as both teams tried to create scoring opportunities. Junior
Jess Doggett gave Fairfield a 1-0 lead when she scored her first goal of the season at 32:39.
Shealyn Testa picked up the assist when she sent the ball to the center of the circle where Doggett flicked the ball to the right side of the goal. The Stags continued to play at a fast pace and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Stags attacked throughout the entire second half, dominating play and adding four more goals. The scoring continued at 39:11 when Heinen netted a goal off a penalty corner to give Fairfield a 2-0 lead. The goal was assisted by
Valerie Buurma and
Emily Leo. About five minutes later,
Julie de Paeuw scored from the right side of the circle off a pass from her left by
Hillary Fitts.
Heinen's second goal of the game was scored off another penalty corner at 49:38. The goal was again assisted by Buurma and Leo and gave Fairfield a 4-0 advantage. Heinen capped off her hat trick with the last goal of the game in the 54
th minute after a corner taken by Leo. Leo passed the ball into Buurma who set up the shot for Heinen. Heinen shot the ball high into the net over the River Hawks' goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins, making the final score of the game 5-0.
Goalkeeper Bennett was unforgiving in the goal tallying four saves to post her second collegiate shutout. Hopkins made 12 saves for UMass Lowell as she faced 19 Fairfield shots. The Stags out-shot the River Hawks, 29-10, and had a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Fairfield will take America East play on the road, stopping at No. 12 Albany on October 26 and New Hampshire on November 1.
