Game Notes
FAIIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team begins a two-game homestand this week by hosting Loyola University on Monday night at Webster Bank Arena. The game is slated for a 7 pm tip-off. It will be the second time that the Stags and Greyhounds will meet this season. Loyola edged Fairfield in overtime earlier this year.
The Stags come into the game with a 10-9 overall record and a 2-5 MAAC mark after falling to Iona College last Friday. The game marked the 15th time that Fairfield has played a game off campus in its first 19 outings this year. The team will play only its fifth home of the season on Monday night.
Not only has Fairfield had to play most of its first seven Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games on the road, but the games have come against some of the teams that are among the current conference leaders. The Stags have already closed out season series with Canisius and Niagara and will add Loyola to that list on Monday night.
Senior
Derek Needham broke out in fine fashion against Iona, netting 26 points by tying his career high with six three-point field goals. He made nine field goals in the game to pace the Stags offense. With that performance, Needham raised his team-leading scoring average to 14.1 points every forty minutes.
Marcus Gilbert and
Maurice Barrow each reached double figures against the Gaels with 12 points each.
Barrow has posted double-digit scoring efforts in back-to-back games after scoring 10 points against Niagara. Gilbert established a career-high with his 12-point performance against the Gaels, and also recorded personal bests for assists (2), field goals (6), and minutes played (36).
The Greyhounds improved to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in MAAC play following its 72-58 win over Marist College at Reitz Arena. The victory was the team's fourth in its last five outings which included an overtime win against the Stags. Loyola had support across the board as four student-athletes reached double figures, led by Dylon Cormier's 19 points. Julius Brooks tied his career high with 12 points while Erik Etherly and Anthony Winbush added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Cormier remains the team's top scorer with a 17.4 scoring average, one of three Greyhounds averaging in double figures. Etherly (15.4 ppg) and Robert Olson (11.8 ppg) are also scoring better than 10 points every forty minutes. Olson represents the team's top three-point shooter with 31 baskets from behind the arc. Winbush leads the team with 6.8 caroms per contest. Loyola starts a stretch where it plays four road games in the next five dates which includes the annual trip to upstate New York for Canisius (January 31) and Niagara (February 2).
