FAIRFIELD, Conn. –Fairfield University field hockey improves to 3-2 today with a 4-2 victory over Lehigh University. This marks the third straight win over the Mountain Hawks in as many seasons and the third game in which the Stags have scored four or more goals.
Fairfield controlled the game outshooting Lehigh 30-12. It wasn't until the seventh shot that the Stags got on the board with a penalty stroke by
Felicitas Heinen at the 18:27 mark. Just three minutes later, Heinen put it in the net once again after a penalty corner by
Nikki McLucas and a set up by
Valerie Buurma. In the first half, Fairfield took nine penalty corners compared to the Mountain Hawks' one. The score of 2-0 held through the end of the period as Lehigh goalkeeper Sydney Maltinsky tallied 11 saves.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, Lehigh got on the board with a goal by Alex Beatson and an assist by Marie Mignogna. But Fairfield's
Molly Caffrey responded less than three minutes later. McLucas took a corner and with some passing back and forth in front of the net between
Kristian Stefanides and Heinen, Caffrey got the final shot and increased the lead, 3-1. With 11 minutes left to play, Lehigh threatened the Stags' defense but
Shealyn Testa had a huge steal and took the ball up field passing first to Stefanides who passed it off to
Hillary Fitts. Fitts then assisted
Lindsey Hatch who made Fairfield's final goal of the day. Lehigh refused to back down without a fight and in the 64th minute, Lindsay Metzger added another goal onto the board for the Mountain Hawks. That was all the damage Lehigh would do in the final minutes of the game, the score of 4-2 held through the end of the second period.
The Stags (3-2) will close out the weekend on Sunday against Saint Joseph's University (1-3) after they host their Friend's Event on the Fairfield University Oak Room Patio at 11:30a.m. The game will start on University Field at 1p.m.
