FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team blanked Holy Cross this afternoon in a 4-0 victory to improve their record to 6-3 on the season.
The Stags dominated play from the beginning with a goal in the fourth minute by
Lindsey Hatch. Sophomore
Sarah Wickles crossed the ball in front of the net to Hatch who put it into the top left corner past goalkeeper Kat Matchett. Fairfield had four more shots before the Crusaders' first and only shot of the half, which was blocked. A penalty corner at the 21:21 mark taken by
Emily Leo resulted in Fairfield increasing their lead 2-0. Leo passed the ball in to
Valerie Buurma who set it up for
Felicitas Heinen for the goal. The Stags had a total of eight penalty corners in the first half compared to Holy Cross' one, and 14 shots compared to the Crusaders' one shot.
Entering the second period, Fairfield was up 2-0 and immediately made that 3-0 with a goal by
Nikki McLucas.
Christy Starsinic passed to McLucas who backhanded the ball into the net from eight yards out. Just over ten minutes into the half, the Stags had their fourth and final goal.
Shealyn Testa put one in the net at the 45:37 mark, unassisted. The Holy Cross field hockey team was able to get three shots off before the final buzzer but unable to get one passed
Maddy Sposito who had three saves on the day and tallied her third shutout on the season.
The Stags will close out their weekend with a matchup at Columbia University on Sunday at 1p.m. Next Friday, Fairfield opens America East play at home against No. 16 University of New Hampshire at 3p.m. on University Field.
