FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team came up short in double overtime as Northeastern University (4-1 overall) came away with a 1-0 win at Lessing Field. The winning goal came with 1:32 remaining in the second overtime.

The Huskies came out and attacked aggressively in the opening 25 minutes, but the Fairfield defense kept the visitors off the scoreboard. Goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe turned away three shots during that run and was not forced to make a save in the final 10 minutes of the opening half.

The Stags had their best opportunity in the 26th  minute when defender Matt Danaher crept into the box and released a shot that was saved by Northeastern goalkeeper Dylan Faber, but the ball came right back to Danaher. He took a second shot from 12 yards away, but this time a defender stepped in front and ended the threat.

Fairfield controlled the second half by more than doubling Northeastern's shot total. The Stags outshot the opposition by a 5-2 count over the 45 minutes, but were unable to put anything on goal. Three of those five shots were headers off two corner kicks and a cross that sailed just over the cross bar.

In the first overtime, two more headers nearly provided a Fairfield goal but Faber made saves both times. The second of those attempts came from Jordan Ayris who had the goalkeeper beat high, but Faber just tipped the ball over the cross bar to keep the game going.

The deciding goal came in the 109th minute when Don Anding ran down a ball deep in the left corner of the pitch. He took a step and sent the ball into the box. Carter slid into the cross and put his foot on the ball as he was on the ground, just pushing the ball past a fully-extended goalkeeper to score the deciding goal.

Fairfield outshot Northeastern by a 12-10 count while both goalkeepers finished with five saves.

The Stags return to the pitch next weekend when they head to the University of New Mexico for a two-game tournament. Fairfield opens the weekend against its nationally-ranked host before finishing up with the University of Denver on Sunday.
