Game Notes

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team plays a pair of games this week, starting with a road game against Long Island University on Wednesday, September 12. The Stags end the week with a home against Northeastern on Saturday, September 15, playing a team which has received votes in the national poll this year.

Fairfield played one game last week, posting a 1-0 win over Yale University at home. Freshman George Newton scored the game's only goal, his first points of the season. For his effort, Newton was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rookie of the week. The Stags posted their second shutout in three games, lowering goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe's goals against average to 0.33. He is ranked nationally in goals against average (11th) and in save percentage (7th with .923).

Long Island University will play its second straight home game by hosting the Stags on September 12. The Blackbirds played four road games to start the campaign and lost all of those dates. The team was shutout in each of those road games and did not score a goal until Jakeem Johnson converting a penalty kick against Rider in its last outing.

Northeastern suffered its first loss of the season in its last game, a 4- 1 setback that gave the team a 3-1 record heading into the week. The Huskies won their first three games including 1-0 shutouts of Marist and Harvard. The team owns a 2-0 record at home and plays its third road game of the season at Fairfield. Dan Anding leads the team in scoring with five points (two goals, one assist) and is one of three Huskies with a game-winning goal this year.

Fairfield brings a 2-1 record into this week's action with all three results coming from a 1-0 decision. The team opened the season with a 1-0 win at Columbia before falling to nationally-ranked Boston College at home.
