DURHAM, N.C. – The Fairfield University volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Duke University squad this morning, falling to the Blue Devils 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 20-25) at the Duke Invitational.
 
Sophomore Caitlin Stapleton tallied a team-high nine kills for the Stags while senior Brianna Dixion and freshman Nicole Marzik added seven kills apiece. Senior Kara Reis had 15 digs.
 
Duke (2-0) hit .351 with 44 kills on the day. The Blue Devils set the tone by opening the match on a 15-3 run and finishing the set with a .483 attack percentage and 17 kills.
 
In the second stanza, the Stags kept things close in the early going. Dixion pulled Fairfield within 11-8 on a kill but Duke used a 4-1 run to gain room. The Stags later cut the gap to 19-16 on after a pair of Duke errors but the Blue Devils went on a 5-1 run. Fairfield was able to hold off set point four times and move within 24-20 but Duke's Christiana Gray ended the comeback with a kill. Duke then controlled in the third to come away with the 25-20 victory.
 
Fairfield (0-2) will finish play at the Duke Invitational this evening against the College of William & Mary at 5pm. Live Stats are available for that match.
