FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Alli Wigand drove home the deciding in both ends of a doubleheader as the Fairfield University softball team swept Siena College by 4-3 and 2-0 scores. The two wins place the Stags in the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference softball tournament as the number two seed, finishing the campaign with an 11-5 conference record.

The Stags jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opener when Wigand reached base on an error to start the fourth inning. She went to second after Rae Ball walked and moved up another base when Kristen Filicia singled. Tiffany Lawson drove home the run with a sacrifice fly to foul territory down the left field line.

Siena took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, as infielder Megan Volz lined a two-run single to finish off the scoring in that inning. Fairfield tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning, the first coming off a solo home run by Kimi Kurata. Sammy Ruffolo tied the game with an infield single that chased home Lawson to make it 3-3.

Fairfield would wi the game with one out in the bottom of the ninth as Wigand's single up the middle allowed Ruffolo to score just ahead of the throw to make the final score 4-3. Rebecca Trott earned her 16th win of the season, striking out eight batters and scattering 12 hits over nine innings.

The Stags received another outstanding pitching performance from Ball in the second game, as the sophomore allowed just three hits over her seven innings of work. Fairfield grabbed the lead in the first inning after Filicia led off with a single. She stole second and third bases, setting up an RBI ground out by Wigand.

The team doubled its advantage in the sixth inning, using two hits to plate another run. Ball singled with oue out and went to second on Kurata's sacrifice bunt. Lawson came up with an RBI single to make it 2-0, placing a ball into left field for the base hit.
