FAIRFIELD, Conn. --
Lauren Liseth drove home four runs, stroked four hits, and hit a two-run homer as the Fairfield University softball team split a doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island. The Rams won the first game by a 5-4 score, but the Stags followed up with a 4-3 victory in the second game.
The Stags fell behind in the opener as Rhode Island opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning after Kelly Coker singled home a base runner. Fairfield took the lead in the third inning courtesy of Liseth's two-run homer that gave the team a 2-1 edge. The home team added to its advantage with another two runs in the fifth inning as
Mikayla Shumate and
Alli Wigand each singled home a base runner.
Rhode Island made a strong comeback in the sixth inning as they touched starter
Rae Ball for four runs on four hits, the key hit being a two-run double by Coker. Fairfield had only one more base runner the rest of the way, a two-out single by Shumate, but could not score the tying run. Ball took the loss after giving up seven hits and walking five in five-plus innings.
Emily Orr tossed the final four outs and yielded only one hit.
The Stags found themselves behind in game two as well as the Rams plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning against starter

Fairfield put up a single run in the bottom of the second and third innings to take control for good at 4-2. In the second inning, Fairfield put together three hits with the last being an RBI infield single by Liseth. One inning later,
Nikki Osofsky laced a base hit to center field to send home Ball. Rhode Island threatened in the sixth inning when it scored a run and left a runner on base. The final out of the inning came when the Stags stopped a double steal with a runner being thrown out at home.
Trott struck out the first two hitters in the seventh inning before surrendering a single to Courtney Prendergast. However, the right hander retired Nicole Massoni on a pop up to end the game. Trott earned her ninth win by fanning out six hitters and scattering eight hits.
The Stags return to action on Wednesday when they head to Quinnipiac University for a single game. The team finishes up the week by hosting a conference doubleheader against Marist College on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1 pm.
